General Jewelry Care

Storage Procedures

More often than not, tarnishing and the dulling of jewelry can be attributed to poor jewelry storage procedures. Please refer to the following list to store your jewelry in the optimal conditions to keep your jewelry looking its best for longer.

  • The golden rule of jewelry care is "last thing on, first thing off". Make your jewelry the last thing you put on before going out, and the first thing you take off when coming home.
  • Store your jewelry in a dry, cool place. Moisture contributes to the tarnishing of jewelry, use a drying-agent like silica gel packs in your jewelry container.
  • Store your jewelry in separate compartments or soft pouches to prevent scratches and dulling (use your included velvet pouch!)
  • If needed, clean and dry your jewelry before storing (refer to general cleaning below).

When to Remove

Your jewelry is made to last a lifetime. However, they are still delicate pieces that can dull, tarnish, or get damaged if not taken care of properly. Please remove your jewelry before participating in the following scenarios.

  • Remove jewelry before doing chores, can cause expedited dulling and tarnishing due to harsh chemicals and frequency of contact with surfaces.
  • Remove jewelry before getting ready; lotion, hairsprays, makeup, shampoo, perfumes, etc., can cause tarnishing in your jewelry due to the presence of sulfates.
  • Remove jewelry before swimming, the chlorine and moisture will contribute to tarnishing and the cooler temperatures can shrink your finger and increase the likeliness of losing your ring.
  • Remove jewelry before physical activities, such as working out, skiing, bowling, hiking, etc. Jewelry can get damaged, but more importantly, can be dangerous in certain scenarios, use your best judgement.
  • Remove your jewelry when you get home, especially before sleep, in a dedicated jewelry storage spot to prevent losing your precious pieces.

General Cleaning

If your jewelry requires cleaning, please perform the following to maintain proper jewelry hygiene.

  • Clean your jewelry using a soft-bristle brush, gentle dish soap, and lukewarm water
  • Soak your jewelry for a few minutes in a solution made with one to two drops of gentle dish soap and lukewarm water
  • Use a soft-bristle brush to scrub away dirt and grime from your jewelry in a circular motion
  • Rinse using lukewarm water and pat dry with a microfiber cloth
  • Repeat these steps, if necessary

FOR STERLING SILVER - Even after general cleaning, tarnish stains can remain on the surface of your jewelry. The following steps is an at-home method for removing tarnish. Please only use this method if necessary, a small layer of tarnish can actually protect your piece from tarnishing faster.

  • Completely line a bowl with aluminum foil and add a small layer of baking soda on top of the foil
  • Place your tarnished jewelry on top of the baking soda
  • Pour boiling water into the bowl, making sure that the baking soda/water solution covers the jewelry (1 tablespoon of baking soda per 1 cup of water)
  • Let the jewelry soak for a few minutes (depending on severity of tarnishing), making sure that the jewelry is in contact with the foil
  • Carefully remove the jewelry and polish using a dry microfiber cloth
  • Rinse using lukewarm water and dry completely

Keep in mind, any damages from incorrect handling/cleaning by you or a third-party individual is not covered by the warranty and is no longer able to receive the complimentary cleaning/polishing.

Professional Cleaning

If your jewelry is dull and general cleaning is insufficient, you may require a professional cleaning and/or polishing. Please contact us @ for more information on how to request a cleaning/polishing to restore your jewelry's shine.

Although a few cleanings will not affect your piece, it is not recommended to get very frequent polishings as a professional polishing removes an ultra thin layer of metal from your jewelry.

General Care Tips & Tricks

  • The best general tip for all jewelry care is that it requires gentle care and occasional cleaning/polishing.
  • Carry around the included Davis Bijouterie velvet pouch in your bag for easy storing when removing your jewelry.
  • For easier cleaning/polishing, consider an ultrasonic cleaner or a jewelry polishing cloth.
  • Although it is recommended removing your silver jewelry in certain scenarios, believe it or not, wearing your jewelry often instead of storing for long periods of time between wears can protect your piece from tarnishing. The natural oils on your hand protect the silver from oxidizing.
  • If long-term storing is needed, please clean and completely dry your jewelry and store in a cool, dry, and enclosed container like a box or pouch with a drying-agent such as silica gel packets, if possible.
  • Although a small amount of tarnish on silver will protect it from further tarnishing, letting too much tarnish build up is not recommended as it would become much more difficult to remove through general cleaning. The timetable for tarnishing will differ per person based on many factors, however generally you should clean your tarnished silver once or twice a year.
  • When in doubt, just contact us @ and we will try our best to assist you to the best of our abilities with your jewelry issues.

Most Common Jewelry Care Mistakes

1. Improper Jewelry Storage
To extend the life of your jewelry, follow proper storage procedures when not wearing your pieces, refer to the "Storage Procedures" section above.

2. Never Taking Your Jewelry Off
This doesn't mean you can't wear your favorite pieces everyday. This just means you should take them off when necessary, see the "When to Remove" section above.

3. Infrequent Cleaning
When you notice a buildup of dirt and grime, or a development of tarnish, cleaning your jewelry will keep your pieces looking newer for longer. Please refer to the "General Cleaning" and "Professional Cleaning" sections above.

By Material

925 Sterling Silver

Though our silver is made to be tarnish-resistant, it is normal for 925 sterling silver jewelry to tarnish over a long period of wear. The following list contains things that attribute to the tarnishing of silver jewelry.

  • Chlorine, please remove jewelry before swimming in a chlorine pool or using chlorine cleaners
  • Sulfates, found in hairsprays, lotions, shampoos, perfumes, etc., remove jewelry before application
  • Water and humidity, though our silver can withstand getting wet, leaving your silver jewelry wet over a long period of time will attribute to tarnishing
  • Vulcanized rubbers, such as rubber bands, rubber gloves, latex gloves, erasers, etc.

Please refer to the General Cleaning section above to review how to remove dirt, grime, and tarnish from sterling silver.

Sterling silver is also subject to dulling from scratches and bending out of shape if enough force is applied. Please avoid using abrasive cloths and soaps when cleaning your silver jewelry. Use soft microfiber cloths to dry and a fabric-lined jewelry box/pouch to store. Prevent unwanted dulling and bending by removing jewelry before performing activities that may subject your piece to significant contact or force.

18K Gold

Instead of tarnishing, the main component of concern with 18K gold jewelry are dulling from micro-scratches and damage such as bending.

  • As a softer alloy of gold, 18K gold jewelry should be handled with care and the wearer should avoid making harsh contact with the piece on other abrasive surfaces.
  • Never use an abrasive cloth or soap when cleaning your 18K gold jewelry as it will dull out the shine and will require polishing to restore it.
  • Store in a fabric-lined jewelry box/pouch to prevent scratching, separate from other jewelry pieces, maintaining its polished surface.
